Whatcom County Jail

Leisure Time

Interview with edward and Joe

JM: What types of facilities were available to help pass the time?
edward: you got to go out to a small outdoor area with 15 foot high concrete walls
Joe: a concrete room with a chainlink window about 15 feet up that you got to go to rarely

JM: Did you have regular access to the entertainment or was competition fierce?
edward: it was regular access it was pretty boring too
Joe: there isnt any competition other than books. and you have a small selection... the books that are free to read usually sit by the stairs.

JM: Did you have a hard time staying in shape while in jail?
edward: no way all there was to do was sit up and push ups or walk around the block for hours on end
Joe: nope. thats all there is to do is work out.

JM: How often did you get to go outside?
edward: in all my time which altogether was 12 days i got out once
Joe: rarely. maybe once every week or two to the concrete box with the sky window.

JM: Did the jail offer church services? If so, what were they like and when were they held?
edward: the chaplin would come by and talk to you he was a cool older gentleman and was very positive and had an uplifting attitude
Joe: no services but a chaplin to talk to once a week.

Actually you have to have a book sent from a publishing company or from something like Amazon.com You can not just go down to your local store and buy one. Always thought that was weird but I guess for them better safe than sorry
